Family Photo Outfits: Do’s and Don’ts

Portraits

back

As a mom, I also know how stressful it can feel to pick out the perfect family photo outfits for your family photo session! The photos will be hanging on your walls for years. Whether you have a 2-year-old or a 16-year-old, it can feel so hard to find an outfit that everyone loves, won’t scratch and itch at, and that look amazing together. No worries, because this blog is here to help! Today I give you my top do’s and don’ts of choosing your family photo outfits.

I absolutely adore family photo sessions. As a mom myself, I know how important it is to capture every milestone of your family and how priceless it is to look back at how each member has grown over the years!

1. Do try to match your outfits

This may seem obvious, but it’s a great starting point. You do want to look cohesive together in your family photos! Try to pick a main color that you like and add in a few neutrals. For example, if you love the color blue, pick a main color of blue such as sapphire or sky blue. Then add in cream, grey, and even a pop of mustard to accent the blue. Pinterest is a HUGE help here. You can type in “family photo {insert color} outfits” and can find so many great ideas!

2. Don’t go too matchy-matchy

After you find the main color you want to work around, this is where the neutrals and accent colors help! Because even if you love the color blue, it may be a bit overwhelming in photos to have everyone in the exact same blue shirt and khakis. While you do what to look cohesive as a family, you don’t want to go too matchy-matchy! This is where you can really get creative and have fun! You could have the girls wear different shades of light pink and the boys wear different shades of grey. Or you could have the kids in a variety of pastel shades and you and your partner wear a similar color to each other. Play around and again, use Pinterest. It is your friend!

3. Do go natural

It can feel overwhelming to look in your closet and not know what to wear for family photos. Should they be formal? Casual? But not too casual? My best piece of advice is to do what feels natural and then uplevel it! Do you guys always wear shorts and t-shirts? Then don’t feel like you have to wear a cocktail dress! Find a nice pair of jeans or khakis for everyone and wear a blouse or button-up shirt for the boys. You also want to think natural when you look at your outfits. I try to steer clients away from large or bold prints, bright colors, or anything else that could be distracting in photos. Natural colors and textures will really help you guys stand out in the photos and not your clothes!

4. Don’t feel pressure

This is my biggest tip and why I saved it for last. Don’t feel pressure to be perfect! You’re only human. It is a lot of work to get your family in the car, dressed nicely, and have smiles on their faces. So try to let go of those expectations of perfect smiles and smooth shirts! Just have fun. If your son absolutely won’t wear the cute little bow tie you bought him, we can take 1 photo with it and then have fun ones where he’s taking it off and smiling.

At the end of the day, family photos are truly to help you remember this moment in time. You’ll want to remember the little dimples, shaggy hair, and teen years. You guys will love the photos of you laughing and tickling each other even more than the perfectly posed photos, I promise. And I guarantee you’ll look great in whatever photo outfit you pick!

I hope these family photo tips helped you guys out! If you ever have questions about your outfits, don’t hesitate to talk to me before your session! I have photographed so many family photo sessions! I can help tell you what works and give you the reassurance that you picked amazing family photo outfits because I’m sure you did.
